Q
A
All information is available via the web. One of the best resources is going to the universities (2005-01-19 14:04)

Host: (Ellen Wang)
Q
A
(2005-01-19 14:06)

Host: (Sarah Moran)
Q
My sister and I plan to study Art Management and Architecture. Is there any access to related financial aids?
A
With regard to your topic of study, to find financial aid, the best way to do that is first through the universities that you are applying to as financial aid is often from the university. Another way to do that is through internationalStudent.com has compiled a database of schools that offer financial aid to international students. To learn more and locate schools that offer aid, please go to www.internationalstudent.com/schools_awarding_aid/ (2005-01-19 14:08)

Host: (Sarah Moran)
Q
I would like to know what differences are between EED and PhD programs on financial aids.
A
With regard to finding financial aid when you are applying to a PhD program, there are more opportunities for international students. PhD programs are often research based and there are work assistantships available to help you pay for your schooling. (2005-01-19 14:10)

Host: (Ellen Wang)
Q
I want to apply Psychotherapy Program in PhD. Can I get the scholarship?
A
Again, when thinking of getting a scholarship or not, the key is -----do you have the honest self-evaluation and amazing research background. (2005-01-19 14:12)

Host: (Ellen Wang)
Q
A
(2005-01-19 14:12)

Host: (Ellen Wang)
Q
MBA or MS in Finance課程的學校,可否提供一些學校名單?
A
(2005-01-19 14:17)

Host: (Sarah Moran)
Q
How do I get the opportunities of RA or TA?
A
For Master degree and PhD programs that are research intensive, finding research assistantships, teacher assistantships are available but you must provide the university with a detailed research interest that you have that demonstrates a "match" with the faculty's research interest in the department you are applying for. There are more research opportunities in a research program; therefore, there should be more financial assistantships available for a PhD program. (2005-01-19 14:17)

Host: (Sarah Moran)
Q
Any online resource to look for financial aid?
A
Yes, here are some financial aid websites, you can go to www.fastweb.monster.com for tips on financial aid and scholarships; finaid.com to search for scholarships that match your profile, and edupass.org which is a comprehensive international student website. (2005-01-19 14:18)

Host: (Ellen Wang)
Q
A
(2005-01-19 14:22)

Host: (Sarah Moran)
Q
Is it hard to get financial aid if I apply for a MBA program?
A
As this is an applied program that is not research based, normally you can't apply for scholarships or teaching/research assistantships as they are not available. But you can apply to the MOE for a loan for graduate studies, or apply to a bank for financial assistance by applying to a bank to acquire assistance I mean a financial loan. (2005-01-19 14:24)

Host: (Julie Hu)
Q
Is PhD better than EED? Any differences between them when applying for financial aids?
A
Yes, more financial aid is available at the PhD level. (2005-01-19 14:24)

Host: (Sarah Moran)
Q
The chance for foreign students to get financial aids is probably lower. Is it true?
A
It depends on where you are searching for financial aid, what degree you are applying to, how focused you are, and how well you establish your research goals and research and work history... As such, when you are applying for financial assistantship and even applying to a graduate program the better you demonstrate that you are a good fit with the faculty and the program, and the more innovative your research interests are, the better chances you have of receiving assistantship. The basic rule is to find very specific and narrow grants/scholarships. The more closely it fits your academic/professional goals and research interests, the better chance you will have. Grants and scholarships do require solid academic performance, but the most important factor is not centered on grades. Instead, what the Review board members are looking for, is an appropriate candidate---that is, are you what they are looking for? Do you match the mission and vision of the rant/scholarship? Are you committed to the field? Are you and will you contribute to the field? Will your work benefit previous and future research? So, even if you don't have the top grades or the highest honors, but you have the intensity, and you have the passion, you still have a good probability of winning such funding. (2005-01-19 14:28)

Host: (Ellen Wang)
Q
A
Not at all. Tell the school honestly, if you need financial aid when applying. This is not going to have any "bad" influence when applying. Don't worry about that. (2005-01-19 14:30)

Host: (judyc)
Q
Do you know which company is willing to support foreign students to enter university of the U.S.? Taiwan, U.S. company, could you show us?
A
Normally, a company sponsors an employee who has worked for the company for a number of years. So, when you apply for a job you should ask the prospective employer whether they have a program to sponsor employees for education. (2005-01-19 14:38)

Host: (Sarah Moran)
Q
What kind of subject will be easy to get aid?
A
It doesn't depend on the fields. It only rely on how well the research or the academic performance this student did (or does). You have to know exactly what you want to study. There is no subject or study program that is the best to find financial aid. It all depends on your interests, your career goals and how well you communicate your interests and goals in your statement of purpose. (2005-01-19 14:37)

Host: (Sarah Moran)
Q
Since I've got the admission and the B-school asked me provide my bank statement ensuring that I can have full financial support. After submitting this statement, the B-school will mail me the admission and I-20. My question is that if I am still waiting others schools' decisions, how can I defer my decision to submit the document. Because B-school will ask you to pay deposit when they mail you the admission and I-20.
A
You can wait to see if the other schools you have applied to have accepted you can then make your final decision. However you will not receive your deposit back and can bring only one I-20 to apply for a visa and to enter the United States. Once you receive acceptance to a school, they give you a deadline upon which you must accept or decline the acceptance, this will help you know how long you can defer your decision to submit the financial documents and deposit. (2005-01-19 14:37)

Host: (Ellen Wang)
Q
If I want to get master's aid that would be difficult than DR?
A
It depends on your career goal. If your goal or research meets the school's need, then you have more advantage when applying assistantships. It is harder to gain assistantships when you are studying for your master degree but there are still some chances. Keep trying and knocking the door of financial aid. (2005-01-19 14:39)

Host: (judyc / Julie Hu)
Q
Do you know AT&T leadership award? Is it canceled by AT&T?
A
I don't think that's available any more. I also understand that the AT&T award was suspended for this year. (2005-01-19 14:42)

Host: (Sarah Moran)
Q
I would like to know what differences are between eed and PhD programs on financial aids?
A
There are more research opportunities in a research program; therefore, there should be more financial assistantships available for a PhD program. (2005-01-19 14:45)

Host: (Ellen Wang)
Q
A
(2005-01-19 14:46)

Host: (Sarah Moran)
Q
I know applying for financial aid is very competitive. If I don't apply for financial aid and I choose to have a part-time job outside the campus, is it ok for a foreign student to do so?
A
Well, you can get a loan which most American students get, and if you work, you can only work 20 hours ON campus. Remember on-campus work must be approved by the international student office and if you get a loan- it would have to be from a local bank here in Taiwan. (2005-01-19 14:49)

Host: (Ellen Wang)
Q
I have already got an admission in early January, but the school did not mention about the scholarship or tuition waive. How's my chance to get an financial aid?
A
You should ask this school directly VIA E-MAIL OR PHONE CALL that is there any scholarship or assistantships for you? (perhaps the school doesn't know you have this need... ) (2005-01-19 14:51)

Host: (Sarah Moran)
Q
If I had the master degree and RA experience. I also have the counseling license. Do these enough to apply finance aid?
A
Yes, that would help to get a teaching assistantship and / or research assistantship BUT it is dependent on what your research experience is, your future research interests, and your long term goals. (2005-01-19 14:51)

Host: (judyc)
Q
Which loan of Taiwan bans most low than others?
A
The Ministry of Education has a student loan program for graduate studies. You can check their web site for details. (2005-01-19 14:52)

Host: (judyc)
Q
Which state, California, Arizona, and Florida, do you think has the highest living expense?
A
California would have the highest living expense, especially in the San Francisco and San Jose area. (2005-01-19 14:56)

Host: (Sarah Moran)
Q
I heard that Chinese students more easy get aid than Taiwan students that would be true?
A
Generally, scholarships at the graduate school level are merit-based. According to school representative, PRC students and Taiwan students and all international students are evaluated in the same manner. Here's what we have been told by university representatives: 1)There stereotype that some university personnel have is that mainland Chinese students have a greater need than Taiwanese students. 2) Chinese students are more assertive than Taiwanese students. Chinese students aggressively and consistently ask professors to accept them for assistantship and research assistantships once they have been accepted into the university to help them with the second year. University officials have said that Taiwanese students are very polite and they like that- but recommend that you are more assertive and don't give up easily. (2005-01-19 15:00)

Host: (Sarah Moran)
Q
GRE or GPA (ranking), which one is more important for scholarship?
A
In terms of GRE and GPA., U.S. universities do NOT only accept students based on numeric performance ratings such as grades, GPA, and GRE, what is ALSO important is your resume, your statement of purpose, and your communication of your research interests and long term goals. So it is a combination of all these factors, including your recommendations that determine whether you receive financial assistance or not. (2005-01-19 15:01)

Host: (Sarah Moran)
Q
I am 36-year-old female, graduating from Taiwan's university in business department, and want to study Physics of bachelor degree. Is it possible to get the financial aid? By the way, I will take my 3-year-old daughter with me, is there any social or financial support?
A
There is no social support but your daughter can study in a local public school as long as you are enrolled (so she will get an F-2 visa). But to get financial support you can apply for a loan from a bank here, you can get assistantship; apply to the school for financial aid (look on the university website). (2005-01-19 15:04)

Host: (Ellen Wang)
Q
A
(2005-01-19 15:04)
