Anne Woringer
Born in Paris, France
Maintains a studio in Paris, France
Woringer is an expert on medieval fabrics, which she
incorporates into her quilts in order to provide
rich textures and lively colors. Le Grand
Rouge reveals her signature style of applying a
multitude of shapes in hand-dyed linen,
characteristically intricate in detail and
masterfully finished. With the interplay of
positive and negative shapes, Woringer creates a
visual animation that complements her treatment of
the opulent fabric. The quilt also reveals her
interest in the visual rhythm of writing, which she
feels is similar to the rhythm of stitching. |

"The
game of light fascinates me. I use gradated
values of colors in mazes and in enclosing clusters,
superimposing them in different sequences so I can
create effects of transparency or optical illusions.
My technique of fragmentation is inspired by
traditional log cabin and crazy quilts. This
gives a certain spontaneity and an element of
surprise to the work." |
