Gisela Hafer was born in Zittau, Germany, a town
known in the Middle Ages for its elaborate textile
hangings. She was introduced to American
quilts as a child when her parents received one in a
care package. After working as an
environmental designer, Hafer trained as a textile
designer at the Academy of Culture in Leipzig and
has designed textile wall hangings since then.
Portraitvariationen II is her vision of herself as
an East German before and after the fall of the
Wall. |

"I think it
is important to find and keep one's roots. But
in spite of that, I am delighted about the fact that
the quilt is becoming increasingly international,
because the international exchange of ideas
stimulates and enriches all of us" |
